What is Breast Augmentation surgery ?

Breast augmentation is the tried and true method for increasing the bustline so that a woman's curvy hips are balanced and look great in a bathing suit. The temperatures are warming up and it won't be long before beach parties and backyard barbecues are happening around the pool. What woman doesn't want to look lovely in her bathing suit?

Breast augmentation entails,

1. A breast augmentation is sometimes affectionately referred to as a "boob job". This procedure is a surgical operation performed by a plastic surgeon in a clinical or hospital setting.

2. The surgery includes making an incision and placing a medical device called an implant inside the breast area.

3. This operation takes approximately one to three hours, depending on the individual case.

4. This surgery is considered to be an outpatient procedure, which means that the patient would not spend the night in the hospital but rather would be released that same day.

5. Incision sites may vary depending on patient's and surgeon's preferences. The options include beneath the nipple and areola, under the fold of the breast, via the armpit or via the navel. If an abdominoplasty is being performed simultaneously, the navel is usually the incision site choice.

6. Implants may be filled with either a saline or silicone solution. There is a new type of implant on the market called a "gummy bear implant". This device has more of a gummy consistency than a liquid feel, thus the name.

7. Implants come in a variety of sizes, shapes and textures. Shapes include round or oval and vary in their level of projection. Sizes range from small, medium to large and can complement any bone structure and figure. Textures may be smooth or ridged in order to help with scarring as well as to avoid slippage after placement.

8. These operations are chosen by women for a variety of reasons including to add fullness to flattened breasts following a pregnancy or lactation; to create a larger bustline or it may be performed in order to reconstruct the breasts after cancer.

9. Recovery time from this procedure is from six weeks to three months. There will be bruising, pain and swelling initially following surgery but all will diminish over time.

If the surgery is desired, a woman would be wise to make an appointment with a reputable plastic surgeon for an initial consultation to get further details and pricing information.
